Just because it seems we need a little kindness right about now. Here are 20 things you can do every day. And please share your stories of kindness in the comments section.

  1. Send a text to someone close to you with a genuine compliment.
  2. Send to someone you love your favorite picture together.
  3. Send a small give to someone just because.
  4. Smile and greet those you pass on the street, in the supermarket or elevator or parking lot, etc.
  5. Refrain from posting that inflammatory comment on the internet. Post a cute kitten picture instead.
  6. Pay it forward. Buy a cup of coffee for the person behind you in line. Give a homeless person your leftovers. Pay someone’s expired parking meter.
  7. Bring a treat (such as doughnuts, bagels, or fruit) to work with a thank you note for your co-workers.
  8. Write something nice on a sticky note and place it on a mirror in a public restroom.
  9. Leave a few pennies heads-up on the sidewalk.
  10. Compliment someone (that friendly wait staff or that store clerk who always smiles and asks about your day) to their boss.
  11. Pick up litter (and don’t litter).
  12. Compliment as many people as you can.
  13. Ask someone, “How can I help you.”
  14. Make an extra plate for dinner and give it to a neighbor or friend, those who are elderly or living alone often find it difficult to cook for themselves.
  15. Hold the elevator or the door.
  16. Say thank you to anyone you can.
  17. Ask someone (the wait staff, janitor, doorman) their name.

(And remember to be kind to yourself.)

  1. Every night remind yourself of the things you are grateful for.
  2. Let someone help you or ask for help.
  3. When you find yourself saying something negative or demeaning to yourself, change that script and compliment yourself instead.
