This past weekend, I went to the Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga concert. I have seen Lady Gaga in concert before and the best moment was when she played the piano on a ballad and just sang without any theatrics. She was really able to show the beauty of her voice. So needless to say, I was excited to hear her stripped down performance with Tony Bennett. Well, as it turns out, it was not about hearing her stripped down performance; it was about seeing her stripped down. Let me elaborate.
So, she and Tony Bennett seem to have a great chemistry and truly sing well together. While Tony sang the entire time, Gaga took a break every few songs for a wardrobe change. I made it to 8 before I lost count. All of the dresses were beautiful yet it was unnecessary pomp. And then, one of the final dresses was a red lace number completely see-through in the front. Yes, it was Lady Gaga singing with Tony Bennett with her bits hanging out. Why?
Now, do not get me wrong, I am not opposed to a concert that is a big spectacle with costumes and pyrotechnics and nudity. It can be good fun. But a concert with Tony Bennett just does not seem like that kind of vibe. And why is it that Tony Bennett did not need costume changes. And he most definitely did not take off his shirt. But that seems to be what we expect of Gaga and it is sad because her voice is amazing. I just wanted her to sing stripped down, lyrically and not literally, with Tony.
